So we know how it feels to live in a shanty town ?

    Katharina Siebenhaar
    Oct 12, 2009

because it will help us relate the the people who live in shanty towns, even if the experiences we will gather in that one night will not be nearly as bad as what the people who live in shanty towns have to live with every day it will help us understand and teach us about what their life must be like. also it will help us appreciate our life since it will show us how lucky we are.

It will give us a sight of how shanty towns work (kind of) and should make us feel more empathy for the people that actually live in this kind of housing. We're supposed to appreciate our lifestyle and the kind of environment that we live in. It will help us create more respect for the poor, because they have to go through a lot worse everyday. We might complain about having too much homework and they complain about not having a proper education, or an education at all (or they just don't complain...?)

because it will make us to experience the suffering of people who live in shanty towns. Also, we will be realizing how serious the problem is

This experience will help us understand the life conditions that we will most likely never face in our lives. The people going to NIS's grade 10 all live somewhere in big houses where you afford things like food which most of the people living in shanty town's would not have a steady income or nicer housing so they wouldn't be able to live like we do. This will help but still won't exactly show us how these people live but it will guide us. I agree with Katharina's comment, she has explained my idea in more detail as well as explaining that it is not the end of the world.

We've pretty much all got a perfect life, we've got families, the chance to live in another country, learn more about new cultures, we've got a good education... there's not anything we should complain about. Living in "a piece of junk" for a night, might just a little bit affect our view, and maybe make us appreciate our lives, and make us realize how lucky we are. Of course our conditions still are pretty good, it's nothing like people who actually do live in shanty towns, but if we can already complain about what we're doing... then how lucky does that make us!?

It is for us to have understanding of the topic. It is easy to understand something if you are experiencing it. After doing the shanty town night we will have a better a greater appreciation as well as appreciating the topic more. I agree with Amanda that after this exercise we will have empathy and sympathy for these people who have suffered and are suffering.

I agree with Sally's. Additionally, we will be able to think about better solutions because we are actually in kind of suffering(?) situation. We will try to think of ideas to 'how we can make better housing so that people in shanty town don't get suffered?'

By creating the shanty towns I am sure we can understand how hard it is for people to live in shanty houses. We can get an experience of how it like beside looking at images. It tells us to respect those who live in the shanty towns(since they live in such a poor condition). Considering with the experience of a night in the shanty house, I can also be aware of how lucky we are to have our easy(comparing with those live in the shanty town) life and to cherish what we already have. It may stop me from complaining(I suppose).

It will help us to feel the other side of the world. If this experience is not planned on this Thursday, some people in here will never know how the people in shanty town feel and live. This can also extend students' sights. The shanty town experience will support us to understand various levels of people in this world and help us to live in this various society.

Most students included me in here are not poor. I mean we are not living in shanty town. I would say that we are going to consider how make more better housing through this experience. I think this experience is very exciting.

    Oct 12, 2009

The shanty town project we are doing is to make us get a idea of how the poor people really live. When we hear that a place was flooded or destroyed we only have the images of the families suffering, but we don't really know what is happening because it is out of our realities. when we make this experience we can get a better idea of how many people, that are not so lucky as us, are living.

    Oct 12, 2009

Because they want to teach us like Spartan taught their students. It will gives us an idea of how poor is virtually like and it will broaden our perspectives of looking at poor lives and their bad conditions. By experiencing their lives styles, we could appreciate our lives again.

Because we should know how it is not to have such a comfortable environment as we do. We getter a better insight on how the people who does live in these shanties have it. Doing something in real life become a whole different thing than if we only read about it.

Watching the movie "Slumdog millionaire" will probably touch and make us reflect for the next 2 hours, but by gone through living in shanty town ourselves will surely make us remember for our whole school life (or even our whole life)....
We as a lucky generation sometimes disdain to the poor people. And now its our turn to stand on their position looking the society. Putting down our self-esteem, having people filming and taking photos of us suffering. This will lead us having a more polite behavior towards poorer ppl.

P.S - and hopefully it also make us rethought to our daily attitude, and start to appreciate our warm soft bed. :P

Because it is a kind of new experience that student like us can hardly go through in a whole life, it will be meaningful for us. We may feel the difficulties that the poor have every day in LEDC which is the poor countries. And after this experience, we would consider the urban problems, especially hosing, more serious and be more willing to help those people living in such bad conditions.

The reason why teachers are trying to make students sleep out even though they have their safe house is to make students aware of the poor living conditions in shanty town. Understanding the severeness of urban housing problem, students will be more proactive learning and trying to solve urban problems.

I agree with the first sentence of Seung Hak's comment! haha
In the aspect of feeling how poor the slum is, this experience would be more efficient than just reading text books.
There is a korean proverb illustrating this situation. "100 times of reading is worthless than once of actually seeing it. 100 times of seeing is worthless than once of acting it out." Korean students would know this proverb(백문이 불여일견, 백견이 불여일행(앞문장은 진짜 속담, 뒤에꺼는 원래 중국에서 쓰여졌지만 요즈음 한국에서도 자주 쓰이는 문장)). This proverb tells how good it is to actually acting our than just reading a text book. Mathematically, Acting out is 10000 times worth than reading (100 X 100 = 10000) (just a joke).

All the students in our school might not have as many serious problems as people living in a shanty town to live on, hence, it's quite for us to understand and feel how hard to live in there. I agree with what Kun Do said that this experience would be more efficient than just reading text books. While suffering from constructing our own houses and things we haven't much experienced in our daily life, we would appreciate what we have and stop complaining about the life.

That's what I want to ask the teachers.....(just kidding :P). Experiencing the 'Shanty Town' has some negative aspects. For instance, horrible mosquitoes, discomfort, insanitary environment just to name a few. However, despite the negative things, there are some accounts why grade 10 students have to smile. We will never experience the 'Shanty Town' unless we become homeless. After experiencing the 'Shanty Town', everybody is expected to learn about 'Shanty Town' physically and realize that we have to make efforts in studies as an attitude of learner if we do not want to live our whole life like that.

We always see pictures and videos of shanty towns and the terrible living conditions that they live in. However when we view these pictures we only sympathize to a certain extent. By making our own shanty town, we will start to emphasize and understand a little bit towards how these people will live. Making our own shanty town will help us gain new experiences as well as helping us realize how lucky we all are.

I agree with Jia Yin's words, that it is our turn to stand on their position to look the society in different views. The experience will provide us an opportunity to understand and sympathize about one of the biggest problem in our world by experience their real life. 'Understanding is a first step for solving problems. ' This experience will give us ideas and help to solve problems in the future, and will make us more mature by understanding about global issues.

As everybody have said, I agree that this experience will make us to complain less about our food, house or something else. Honestly, this experience did made me to not to complain about those things. Also, I recognized MY HOUSE was the BEST place ever !! :) It's warm with nice food. But how would the people who live in the real shanty town?? I can't even believe they have to go to school even though they live in place like that. It's TOO cold, SUFFERING, NO LIGHT,... It was really hard for us to live there for even ONE day, but they have to live like...rest of their lives?? The government must and WE must try to come up with some good ideas so that they can live in a nice warm places as quickly as possible...I hope:)
I hope everybody in Grade 10 also felt something like this after having 'Shanty town' experience.
