Last year we were running on a Windows server. This year we have migrated to a Mac server. The students with MacBooks have no problem because their laptops are automatically configured for the new server. If you have students who have work still on the old server, it's okay because they will now be able to migrate their files.
The old server will be going away sometime in the future. Not in the foreseeable future, but sometime. Thus, it's best to move your files over soon.
StudentShare and Public are on the new server. It's backed up, it's in good shape.
To find the server: Finder / Go / Connect to Server Type in the address of the server you are connecting to. apf://192.168.80.5 (students) apf://192.168.80.4 (staff) smb://192.168.30.1 (staff - old server)
Only files located in Documents are sinc'ed with the server. Therefore, you must put all your most important files into Documents. If you prefer to have your most important folders sitting on the desktop, then in Documents, right click on the folder in question and create an alias. Click and drag that alias onto your desktop (or where ever it needs to be).
To find your new personal folder, you need to go to StaffHome, on the new server.
Teachers have permission to go into any child's folder. To do so, go into the student server. Click on StudentHome to go into any student's folder. Once you have mounted the StudentHome server, you can mount it, right click on it and make an alias. That way you can always find student folders in only one click. It's a good idea to make all your alias have specific alias so that you can find things easily.
You can make folders in areas where there is no crossed out pencil mark. Whenever you make a folder, you are the folder's owner, and it is your responsibility to set permissions for that folder. Therefore, once you have renamed the folder, you need to click COMMAND+I or right click and choose Show Info. Then, click on the list of people who might be involved in this folder (e.g. Staff, Students, etc.) and set the permissions for each group. For example, you may want students to be able to see files and to download them only. Or, you may choose to create a drop box in which students can save but they cannot physically see their files. If you want to get into a folder for which you don't have permission, then you need to email the owner of that folder and ask them to add permissions for you.
