Have students use storyboards to plan their presentation

Keynote not that much different from power point.
Use the writing process, make a story board before getting onto keynote.
Google - story board to get lots of examples for kids to use first.

    Very useful. Cool! Thanks!

Construction first. And inspector key is very important to show functions I had used with powerpoint. Farewell Powerpoint.

    Niki SwartSep 24, 2008 12:43 PM

Not that different than Power Point - same ideas when teaching - check out the two sites in Aaron's comment above.
Always get the students to plan before they even open keynote. Keynote is only the tool in presenting the end product.

Photo booth is how we use the webcam on the computer

Keynote: Use the i (Inspector) for customising your slides
When changing background colours use slide inspector. When going into colour change - use the magnifying glass icon if you have a colour that you want to capture and use.

Create textboxes: Click on the text box icon in the toolbar and the text box will automatically appear. Use the inspector to change things with your text.

To customise toolbar so that it contains icons that you use a lot : go to view and go to customise toolbar and drag and drop the icons you want into your toolbar. To remove an icon from the toolbar - right click and click remove item.

To change the font: go to font icon then at the bottom left click on the gear icon and click on show preview and it will give you an example what the font looks like.

To group slides: move mouse to the left of the first slide you want to group then drag over the other slides you want to group then click tab and this will automatically group them. The slide above the grouped slides will have an arrow, click on this and it will move the grouped slides behind this slide. This would be a handy tool to manage slides if you have many.

Show master slides: (this is to format all cells) - go to view icon in toolbar, click show master slide. The master slides appear in the left view bar then drag the format you want into your slide section

Add Sound: Open media and then select audio - pick a song from iTunes and drop and drag it onto the slide. If you want to change the audio eg control when you want the audio to play - go to inspector then open quick time (icon on the far right) - eg you can select how long you want it to play - test it by pressing play at the bottom of the inspector. Other options: looping (repeating the same audio over and over again)
    Recording; file - record slideshow

Alpha Tool: This changes the background of images to be the same as your slide background. Your image must have a solid background in order for this to be effective.

Hyperlink: click on the text - click insert - click hyperlink - click slide - then use the inspector - click second icon from the right - this allows you to select which slide you want to hyperlink with.

Great session Aaron. I was able to take notes on everything and you paced it really well. I feel confident to use Keynote after your presentation. Thank-you!

Slide inspector - the second button on the inspector. If you choose "appearance" this will allow you to change the color of the backgroups (toward the bottom there's a color box, and you can choose the icons above to see how you would like to view those colors. Within the color palette box, there is a MAGNIFYING GLASS which will let you choose the color from something on your computer (an image) and match the color.

You can also use images for backgrounds through this piece, but images don't always make the best backgrounds (unless you have a giant title with maybe a color behind the text).

Add images/movies/music: There is a media button where you can bring things in from iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto. You can drag pictures in from a file. If you want to drag from the internet browser, you should drag to your computer first then to Keynote. Chris A said that you can copy an image from the internet (right click, copy) and then when you paste it in, make sure you set it to "paste and match style". It seems to work!

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 26, 2008 10:18 AM

INSERT a movie: Very easy from iMovie or from your computer. Just use the media button or drag it from your file. If you want to embed a Youtube video, I have no idea and neither did anyone else. But, being the wonderfully resourceful people that we are (nudge nudge), we found a Youtube video that someone else created, that explains how to insert a Youtube video into Keynote! :)

Sidenote: Not sure why I keep getting to "uk.youtube.com". For some reason, that has become the default from here.

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 26, 2008 10:18 AM

Cool. Grouping slides allows you to prioritize them (like in an outline). Great to have kids organize slides in an outline sort of format, to demonstrate that they've got a main point and sub points (the outline or paragraphing concept). This is key to having simple and organized slides that directly correspond to a plan. To group the slides, just select the slides and then click "tab". To ungroup them, have them selected and click shift+tab. You can also just click it and move it to the right a little. To select alternating slides (use command+select, clicking the previews of the slides on the left to select them.

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 26, 2008 10:19 AM

Charts - just click the "chart" button. A table will automatically pop up when you choose the kind you want. Just modify the data and away you go. You can customize details in the inspector. Even cooler is you can double click one piece of a pie chart, and pull it out or separate it out (thank you Matthew).

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 26, 2008 10:20 AM

To record on computer, go to SMARTBOARD TOOLS (blue box looking icon on the task bar) | open | recorder. It will record the audio with the built in mic and also whatever happens on your screen.

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 26, 2008 10:21 AM

Alpha tool (a little button at the top, and if it's not there, customize your toolbar by adding it there) will get rid of background in an image you might want to use. If you have, for example, a picture with a black background, you can erase the black and just have the leaf from the foreground.

    Juan SaavedraSep 26, 2008 11:06 AM

With an image open on a slide, click the inspector and then "color fill", the screen that opens has a magnifying glass on the top left, click on it and position it over the colour of the picture you want to copy. This will automatically change the background of your slide to the matching colour. If it doesn't work try dragging the colour to the colour well on the inspector.

    Juan SaavedraSep 26, 2008 11:25 AM

Adding images, audio movies into the presentation. GREAT. Even better with the inspector you can control the amount of video, sound you want your audience to listen, loop it, etc.

    Nadean CurtissSep 26, 2008 11:40 AM

To make changes to PC documents, use Neo Office, available on the internet. Command-space bar will take you to a window where you can type in 'neo office' if you can't find it on the internet....cool!

    Nadean CurtissSep 26, 2008 12:24 PM

Inspiration: Good tool and easy to use. To import pictures, video, etc to the clipboard press: command - control - shift - 4

I like it, and have learned a lot!
