We are learning the importance of interactive lessons. Getting students to move around and interact physically helps quite a few students who normally wouldn't be reached with pen and paper lessons.

Use Venn diagrams as graphic organizer to plan and prepare compare/contrast assignments - great for special needs kids!

Cool iris looks great (when it opens) We need lots of time to play with all these tools

    Ron StilesSep 24, 2008 11:51 AM

Smart board tools - recorder. Press record, do something and all the action will be recorded, along with the audio. Press stop. It automatically saves into your movie folder, and you can play it back when and as often as you like.

    Ron StilesSep 24, 2008 11:56 AM

Take a photo of the marked up screen and it will be saved in the notebook file

Play back can be used to record and play back instructions - which we all repeat millions of times! Can be also used for Maths explanations, especially for kids who need to see the explanations multiple times. But someone needs to show me how to use this please.

Interaction can be defined in different ways. Some feel that they must stand by the whiteboard consistently to make the board useful. Interaction happens through many many other ways (as discussed in the group). The IWB is one of these tools, not a means to an end.

Interaction allows collaboration. There are many tools that allow for interaction.

I LOVE the presenter's use of images to communicate messages.

A whiteboard is used "interactively" when the audience/class is affecting what is happening on the screen/board (one of many definitions).

Technology can be an enabler of interaction (but can also be a barrier).

Some great proprietary software that can be shown on the interactive whiteboard, especially as a kickoff or warmup. Sure, this can be done on an individual computer, but it might be that the purpose is to get all kids engaged and/or excited.

Idea - have kids "sign in" each morning by moving their photo to the "present" column.
Idea - use the board for kids to write in the venn diagram or any chart.
Idea - record the lesson. It can be played back, or posted online (study wiz?). Post whole lessons online for absent or distant students, or review. Repeat instructions if they are recorded briefly. Short math problems can be recorded and played over for repetition. Chinese character writing can be recorded and replayed.

Showcased voicethread.com - Students can show how to do something by posting an image (or screen). They can voice over the image and also make notes on it.

Instructor gave information about how to get an image from Flickr, and pointed out the creative commons feature. I have also been told about FLICKRSTORM which is an online tool that allows you to search Flickr images based on their creative commons license. This can also be safer for students rather than searching Flickr as a whole.

    IMAGE SEARCHING:

COOL IRIS (a plugin for Firefox or Safari) - Makes it very fun and easy to view images. It searches from selected places (Flickr, Google, etc.) for photos. As of now in his experience, it's been pretty "safe" during searches. You can pan the images over (kind of like on an iPhone) which is fun to use on the interactive board.

TAG GALAXY - searches Flickr for images, and puts them into a pretty slick 3D collage for you. It is a search tool but makes the pictures look super cool. Could be a little slow because it throws pictures slowly into a 3D object, but it looks nifty!

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 25, 2008 9:58 AM

TAG GALAXY - one thing I like about it (besides it looking super cool) is that it can visually help kids learn to refine their search terminology. The example was "France" which is a huge topic (represented by a huge sphere). There are little spheres floating around it which also had "Eiffel Tower" and "night" etc. to show that there are more specific pictures in more refined category. If you click on one of those, you will have a choice to refine your topic even more, but what's nice is that it's all visual.

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 25, 2008 10:05 AM

    IMAGE EDITING:
PIcnik.com - load your own pictures. Crop, resize, change exposure, add fun tools. Sure you can do this online. You can also do it in iPhoto which is already on all of our macs and does an excellent job (and is probably faster). However, this lets you leave those pictures up in the "cloud". Also, iPhoto doesn't have the option to add hamburgers and drinks to your picture (random! but the kids would probably enjoy this).

jigsaw planet - allows you to create puzzles with your images. Can introduce a lesson by showing a giant jigsaw puzzle of something related to your topic. The kids can try and put it together as they discover what the topic is.

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 25, 2008 10:14 AM

Can you actually save every lesson? Do you want to? Is it useful? Some students find saved lessons VERY helpful, and may want to refer back to your notes to help them (review for homework).

In NOTEBOOK you can file | export and make the "notebook" file a web page, image file, or a pdf. An alternative to NOTEBOOK (the SmartBoard software) is using an online whiteboard which is already online and can be easily shared. Examples:

SKRBL.com - an online multiuser whiteboard. Save your work onto the cloud, save it, and share it with whomever you want. If you have an account, you can give out the url.

His Delicious user is boomer11 by the way, if you want to find him. I hope it's OK that I shared that here! :)

go to google search and type in teaching with smartboard - url too long to remember to type in

WEBSITES THAT ARE HANDY: Google - teaching with smartboards - there will be some good sites to look at.
    http://pdtogo.com/smart/

http://www.atomiclearning.co.uk - free until the end of November Username: learning2.008 Password: atomic
You need to choose PC version 10 (last PC button). The reason why is because the MAC button is not the same version that we have. The PC version 10 is exactly the same as the MAC version.

http://education.smarttech.com/slat - this is the site to download the lesson activity toolkit

CHANGE THE NUMBER OF ORIENT POINTS: smartboard tools - open on menu bar - SMART Hardware Settings - drop down box - arrow - orientation/alignment settings - choose 20 - click orient (big button on right) - then when you orient put your pen outside the diamond and then drag into the centre cross inside the red cross. You have to be precise as to where you lift the pen.

TO INSERT PICTURES: get images from eg images.google.com - pick a topic - open smartboard toolbar - make sure you have the capture icon - find your picture - click the capture tool - drag over picture and it automatically saves in a notebook file.
Save picture in notebook: - when the picture appears in notebook you can drag the picture into the my content folder which you can find when clicking on the gallery icon. This will save the picture. You can also create folders within the "My Content" so to organise images better.

DEMOS ON HOW SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES WORK: Lesson activity toolkit - Examples

callibration - use a pen, touch the screen outside of the target point then move to the point and release
callibrate to 20 points for best accuracy (you have to adjust the settings - did anyone get how to do that part?)
