Lots of cool things you can do in Pages with pictures and text, etc. Use the Inspector tool to make changes to the document.

Adding comments and tracking changes could be used when marking students' work (soft copy).

    Livia SuriSep 24, 2008 9:22 AM

The "track changes" option is useful to track all changes made in the Pages document. You can also add comments using the "comment" option, without defacing the document. Both these tools are very useful for teachers.

    Evy YaguibouSep 24, 2008 9:31 AM

    1. In the pages toolbar, the functions "comment" and "stop tracking" will be veru useful for marking students' soft copies.

    Chris AllenSep 24, 2008 9:38 AM

Now we know how to get a preview of the fonts.

    Livia SuriSep 24, 2008 9:39 AM

Format - font - show fonts - and then click on the button with the wheel and the little arrow to preview all the fonts, to see what each of them look like.

    Livia SuriSep 24, 2008 9:42 AM

You can save your favorite font in the styles drawer: view - show styles drawer.

    Evy YaguibouSep 24, 2008 9:45 AM

    1. Go to system preferences and click on "universal access", then turn on the zoon function.
    2. Then to zoom in any page you are on, press "option", "command" and = (equal)
    3. To zoom out any page you are on, press "option", "command" and - (minus)

Does anyone know how to count the words on Pages?

    Candace Taylor-WeberSep 24, 2008 10:22 AM

"Inspector" icon on top right is the KEY to customization (looks like a blue dot with an "i" in it). This will open up many options for you to customize your document. A box will pop up on the side. The 10 icons across the top will be the main menus for different options (customizing text, images, layout, etc.).

Wrap (third icon): This can control images and objects in the text. If you want to make sure the image is "floating" so it can move, around, choose floating. You can also wrap the text around the image.

Text inspector (the big T): Here you can modify the color of text, spacing, alignment, as well as add bullets (under "list"), and in the "more" section you can highlight text or entire paragraphs to any color.

The Graphic tool (fifth one) lets you add reflections and shadows to images. "Stroke" is the outline of the image, and you can even insert picture frames here (cool!).

Metrics (little ruler): helps you change the size of the picture, the angle, and the arrangement of the picture (flip, rotate, etc.)

New Area - View | Styles Drawer:
Here you can customize text by styles (fonts, titles, headings, underlines, etc.). Word usually has this in the "format text" section. This can be an alternative to MS Word's paint format feature (where you copy a style or format of text). You can create a custom style (maybe something you commonly use) by creating the format and style, then with it highlighted, click on the styles drawer little drop-down triangle (either in the paragraph style, character styles, or list styles categories).

View | show search: allows you to search for text.

View | comments: With comments you don't actually mark up the document. You simply comment on sections of text. Highlight the text and click the "comment" button at the top (which looks like a sticky-note)

Track Changes (icon at top on main toolbar): If you click this, you can keep track of any changes that are made to a document. Consider the example of how you might ask a student to make further improvements or modifications to their writing. We can't always see what changes are actually made on a final document, but with "track changes" you can see what it was, and what changes were made to it (differentiating from the older version).

View (on left): view invisibles!!!! This is awesome. This is the paragraph formatting icon from MS Word which shows you how the person formatted the document with "invisible" icons, only visible when you enable this.

    Insert Menu:

Page break gives you a new page (teach kids this because they are in the habit of pressing return a million times to make space... bad habit when reformatting later).

    Media Button (on top bar)
Choose the media that you wan tto insert. Works beautifully with iPhoto and iTunes. You can also drag images in from desktop or other folders.

    Built in Templates:
File | New | from Template Chooser. This makes wonderful and visually stunning documents very easily. If you choose something like a newsletter, don't forget about the "sections" button at the top which will show you different styles of pages that you can use within this style.

Customize your Toolbar (add the buttons you want to see and use all the time!)
View | Customize Toolbar - a big screen of buttons will pop up. You can just drag the ones you want to your toolbar (aka Format Bar) if you use them all of the time. It might make your life easier.

How to see what the font looks like BEFORE you select it:
Format | Font | Show Fonts. click the little "gear" wheel at the bottom with the drop down arrow and select "show preview". This will show you the font within the selected text so you can actually see how it works.

Zoom (make document bigger): View | Zoom | Zoom in or zoom out (command+> or command+<). You can also go into system preferences and the universal access feature will allow you to turn on the zooming feature with a different keystroke, but if you set it up from system preferences, it is setting the zoom feature up for the whole computer. The zoom feature within pages is just for pages.

Another System Preferencs Tip - Adding text from different languages or using math symbols. Be sure to go to the regional preferences section of System Preferences. You can choose languages here. Math and other symbols are in the character pallette.

    HELP???
The help menu is very useful. For example, we were looking for the "subscript" and "superscript" feature, but none of us could find it. I went to the "help" menu and in the little search box that popped up, I typed "subscript". If you put your cursor over the first option that eventually pops up (menu items) and don't even click, the window will automatically show you where the menu item is so you don't have to hunt around for where something is. It will automatically show you, and it's SUPER COOL!

    One click = cursor
    two clicks = word
    three clicks = paragraph
To select whole text in paragraphs, just click and select along the left margin (you don't have to highlight the whole thing)
When the I hold the mouse over a word, the pointer turns to an arrow which makes it easy to move words (rather than cut paste)

    Pages | Preferences
AUTOCORRECT - bank of words is small. You can add words to the autocorrect dictionary, and also control the auto correct features (like auto capitalize, auto hyperlink).

    Export and Compatability Options:
File | Export - you can export the document as a word (.doc), pdf (all formatting will be saved regardless of platform).

To set your computer so that word docs always open, find any word doc in finder. Right click (command click) and choose "get info". In the middle there is a place where it says "open with". Change the information there to "pages". Then choose "change all". This means that whenever you have a word doc and you double click on it, it will open with Pages.

    OK... that's it! :)

    CANDACE --

How can I had page numbers that are not repeated between sections? I've got a document on which there is a title page, a table of contents, an introduction, and finally the text. I want no page numbers on the title page and the table of contents. I want roman numerals in the introduction. I want Arabic numerals for the body. I've added my section breaks, but when I Insert/Page Numbers they go on all pages and in the same Arabic numbering.

    Any ideas?

    Ann MartinSep 27, 2008 11:10 AM

AMY - here's what you can do:
You can change the page numbers to be displayed in Roman numerals. Enter a section break after the first x number of pages. In the first section, the one you want to have Roman numeral page numbers, right- or Control-click on the page number you have inserted in the footer & choose the style of number you want. Now, in the next section, click in the body of the document & go to the layout inspector & click on the Section tab. Here you want to uncheck "Use previous headers & footers" & enter your desired starting page number in the box (it may already be set at 1).
