When My Friends Left NIS

Friends come and friends leave. It's just part of people's lives.

First, in Grade 1 (I didn't have any good friends before that), I had a best friend named Arshia. She was a smart Indian girl, but sometimes bossy. We played together for the whole year, and at the last day of school, my heart dropped. Arshia had to leave NIS. I didn't want her leave, but I know that sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and release it, letting the saddening information sinking into your head. In Grade 2, Danbi and Yorim, the two half-blooded (German and Korean) twin girls, left. They moved back to Germany with their older sister, Solboram and their parents. In Grade 4, Eva left. For all these five years Eva and I had been friends, she had always promised me that our friendship wouldn't ever be apart. And we trusted each other. But when I heard these news that Eva's going to leave NIS in the winter holidays- I just practically didn't believe my ears. My jaw was hanging all the way to the ground. I didn't know that Eva would ever break our friendship- it was like signing a contract and not following it. I first thought that Eva and me would lose contact, and our friendship just broke apart, without anyone stopping it. But when Eva left, things were different than I thought. Much different. Eva and me exchanged email addresses, and we promised each other we would mail anytime possible for the next seven or eight years I would stay at NIS. But the sadness couldn't disappear. All Eva's friends (Lena, Nohemi, Minji, Seoin, Chaewon) had tears that meant a lot. The tears were like a book. It tells you what a sadness, despair and desperation. We blinked back tears, gulped won our sore and dry throats where big bumps appeared, and gave a teary, crumpled, wobbly and watery smile. We want Eva to feel farewelled and happy the last week or day at NIS. But instead of smiling, giving each other farewell presents, we bursted into sorrowful tears, crying our eyes out. Everyone can't stop crying. I think crying mean an awful lot to Eva, but I don't think this left a good memory for Eva. Crying at the last day at NIS? It was good enough. So I made up my mind, and think that no matter who leaves, we got to be brave, give them a big smile, wish them the best at the other school, and encourage the person.

I hope I can be a person like what I have described, turning tears into smiles, turning angry words like 'why did you leave?' into wishes and hopes, encouraging instead cries and disbeliefs.

PYP Athletics Day

On Thursday, May 9th, the PYP students were dressed in their house shirts and splits into groups. I was in Ms Emma's group. In Ms Emma's group, there were all fast runners. Joy, Lena, Paulina and Chaeyeon. I was shocked, nervous and excited. I was shocked because I was not sure I would beat the four fast girls. I was nervous because if I don't beat them, I would be kind of depressed. I was excited and eager because I wanted to see if Lena and Joy had improved from last year, how fast is Paulina because isn't in the same class as me, and also with Chaeyeon because she's a new student.

The night before I was praying and praying that the first event wasn't the 400 meters running. My dream came true! The first event was gumboot throw, which, is a pretty easy event. We lined up in our order then threw three times each. I came third. Then we went to high jump. I was terrible at high jump and didn't get anything. I was asking Ms Emma after each event when will be the 400 meters run, then suddenly, nightmare. Ms Emma blurted out, 'Angela, the next event is the 400 meters run.' I almost fainted when I heard the horrible news. Cold sweat came dribbling down my head. My mind was mess and I tried to clear it up. I shook myself. Am I having an ear problem or is it true that in about five minutes I'm going to run the 400 meters? 'Grade 4 group 1 girls please come to the bleachers'. Ms Weatherly announced. Ms Emma then led us to the purple bleachers right on the end. The group 2 boys came flying by, and the girls all cheered like mad. For the first time, I forgot about the run I had to do in three minutes. I was cheering and cheering for two minutes, then Ms Weatherly announced that we should be on our lanes. I trembled. I quivered. I shivered. I shook. I turned white as a paper. I felt like a zombie as I walked towards my lane 6. My legs were stiff, my head was messy and my body wasn't stretched. I felt worried because if my legs wasn't stretched, I wouldn't run as fast as the practice ones with Mr. Andy. I stretched quickly (it wasn't really a stretch because after four seconds I started to sprint). The loud whistle interrupted my daydreaming and I started to sprint as fast as I can. Gloria was in lane 7 and started a few steps before me, so I had to catch up. I was fourth place until I passed 200 meters and Gloria began to slow down as I caught up to her, and beat her. I was happy that I beat Gloria, but they were still concerns. I was concerned that maybe Hyeyeon, which Anthony said was fairly fast, was behind me and I was scared that she might catch up. So I sprinted for fifty meters and felt very very exhausted. I had only one hundred meters to the end. Joy, Paulina and Lena (Paulina and Lena were in the same pace) ahead of me were making a sprint for the end, Ms Weatherly's voice once again was heard, and I felt like I was going to barf. Hyeyeon caught up with me and came ahead of me. A terrible thought came into my head and I wanted to catch up, I did, but she ran ahead again. When I caught sight of the finishing line, I was determined to get third place. I sprang like a spring, with my last might. I could feel the pressure on Hyeyeon too. She was having a last sprint like me. There was a tight competition between me and Hyeyeon. When it was only like five meters to the end, Hyeyeon and I both gave a big jump, Hyeyeon's foot landed one second before me. She got third place. Even though I didn't get any ribbon for that one, I felt happy, relieved and that whole 100 pound mass on my shoulders were released. My bottom and thighs felt stretched and my muscles seemed so tight. I felt uncomfortable in my legs and bottom for about three minutes and then the worst part came. I wanted to barf. Really barf. My stomach tightened, I feel like my intestines are jumping up and down like a trampoline. I asked Ms Emma where's my bowl that I had asked a few minutes ago before I ran. Ms Emma laughed. I didn't feel like laughing at all. I felt like barfing. I felt like lying on my comfy bed. I felt like going to the hospital and taking a surgery. Luckily, we got Yeonsu's mom to the rescue. She brought us small cans of orange juices and watermelon. I sipped and ate. The orange juice was icy cold so I put it on my forehead to make myself cooled. I felt better. But still, I felt like barfing.

Ms Emma then took us to long jump. By that time, I was done with it. I almost barfed into my hands. Tears came out (not because I was crying, it was because of my stupid stomach). Ms Emma suggested that I should sit down on the bleachers and take a rest. I did, and I felt better when I squished my stomach together. I jumped for three times. My score wasn't bad at all, but the last time I got scratch. Then came 200 meters. I didn't run. I sat down on the field and cheered. My voice became hoarse and dry, so I stopped cheering. Of course, Paulina got first place. Then came shotput and frisbee. Then came 100 meters. I ran for 100 meters but got fourth place. So I depended myself on the relay. I had to give a blast on the relay. So I did. I was the first one in the relay of Xuanwu girls, because only me and Hyeyeon are the fastest in our group. Hyeyeon was last. So I sprang. Chaeyeon had beaten me, so I became second. The relay got on and on. When I saw Hyeyeon sprinting, I was radiant. She had beat Joy first, but then Joy had beaten her and we got third place. I was proud of my group members, though second and third runners are a bit slower. But we did extremely well. Everyone worked so hard.

At last, we settled down for lunch. What a lovely, great, eventful, unforgettable long day. I was tired and happy. I wasn't hot. The day was cool and sunny. I liked it. I would never forget the 2012 PYP Athletics Day.

Rio- Brazil Carnival Adventure

My favorite movie is Rio. It's about a male bird named Blu, and he risked his life to go to Brazil, Rio, to meet with his same breed, a blue macao. Blu is a special breed that is all blue with elegant feathers and all of them are extinct, but only Blu is left. A bird scientist named Julio had recently found another female blue macao named Jewel. Julio's meaning is to let Blu fly all the way to Rio, Brazil, and meet with Jewel and have babies, so the blue macao breed will continue. Jewel and Blu had different opinions about humans. Blu was brought up from a kind girl named Linda. Linda found Blu when he was just born and grew with him. Blu soon became Linda's best companion. Jewel is used to the wildlife in the forests, singing with native Brazil birds and dancing together. So when Blu and Jewel are locked up in a cage, Jewel is desperate to escape, but Blu, surprisingly loved it. It had nice, romantic disco music and lovely fake trees. So will Blu and Jewel escape?

I like this movie because of it's music and characters. The music is always like carnival music, very wild and happy. The music always made me so merry and cheerful. I also like the characters because it's made gorgeously by the computer graphics. The colors are also extremely standing out and bright. Everything is made neatly and bold. I liked how the contrasted the colors- like if the trees are green, they would put something like pink flowers around it. If it's purple flowers, they will put some yellow birds next to it. The story is also very funny, it has a clear setting, beginning, problem, solution and a happy ending. At the beginning, all the birds from the forest sing all together, it looks so united and free. When a terrible man that never cares about freedom captures the birds to make money and send the birds overseas, everything became complicated and somewhat different.

The moral is- you need to make this world full of freedom, wildlife and nature.

Field Trip to Zheng He Shipyards

On Friday, April 27th, the Grade 4 team went to see Zheng He's Shipyards.
When we hopped onto the school bus, I sat with my friend Minji and we chatted, then compared our snacks and lunches. When we arrived, we were kind of disappointed. It was only a yellow field with red and blue drawings and little Nanjing local babies or kids with their families jumping around, wearing dirty and unfashionable clothes, having a picnic or playing. When the teachers told us it was the Zheng He park, we understood. When we went inside the gate, there was a massive statue of Zheng He and a paper roll in his hand (maybe it's one of his documentaries or maps). Surrounding him were information written about his seven voyages and how he died. I quickly took out my clipboard out of my colorful backpack, and recorded down as much information I can. Fortunately, I recorded down all the seven voyages. Then I wandered around, and scurried to Minji, because it seems she's having difficulties. She asked me what information we need to record down, We can't record down all the information, because it's way too long. So I told Minji that she only needs to record down when he began his voyage and when he accomplished it, then record where he went. Minji understood and wrote down so fast that I was shocked. By that time, mostly all the kids had finished their recording. Lena, as usual, is a fast-working girl, lined up behind Mr Fielke. I hurried behind Lena and lined up. Mr Fielke soon called all the kids in Grade 4 to form two lines (4B and 4A). Then we lined up fast as a wind, and followed behind our teachers.
I had a short snack with my friends and looked around, then examined the yellow field with blue and red drawings, which is actually Zheng He's map. The blue lines are oceans, and the red lines are places he went, like Sumatra and Ceylon. Mr Fielke wanted Joy, An Dong and me find Africa, because the words are all in Chinese, so we had to translate it.

Before I knew it, we were scampering to the bus and about to drive to the real Zheng He Shipyard! We all jumped onto the bus and sat next to the person we sat on our last bus ride. I, of course, sat with Minji again. This time, we were chattering and imagining about what it would be like in the Zheng He Shipyard. Then estimated how long Zheng He's lead ships called 'Treasure Junks'. At last, our estimation about Zheng He's lead ships were all wrong. It was much larger than we thought!

When we arrived at the Zheng He Shipyard, we found places to eat lunch. I had pancakes with cucumbers and drank lots of water because the day was very sunny. Under the scorching sun, I drank most of my water in my water-bottle, leaving only a quarter for the rest of the trip. I didn't know I'd survive or not with only a quarter of water, but I didn't worry a lot about it. We shared snacks and chatted. Kezia and Gloria entertained us with some strange and funny moves that made us laugh so much that tears came down my eyes! They were too funny girls! Then I went to Anthony, where he was sitting with Leo or Daniel (I didn't remember) and Ms Anna. I chatted with Anthony and Ms Anna for a while and Mr Fielke called is to line up. We were going to see the famous Zheng He's Shipyard! Woo hoo!

We saw a ship that's still building, and it was large. I asked Mr Fielke if the ship is about the same size as Columbus's ship, and Mr Fielke said yes. Mr Fielke then told us all that Zheng He's lead ships are three times bigger than this one. This one is about 140 meters and imagine how big Zheng He's ship is! It says it's about one and a half soccer field! Builders were inside building, and one of the builders thought we looked interesting and stared out the ship window. Apple and Joy kept on shouting to him to let him jump down in Chinese, which I thought was very embarrassing. If I was the poor builder, I would feel embarrassed and angry. But surprisingly, the builder just stood there, like a statue looking at us. Maybe he thought blonde kids looked interesting. We also saw the anchor of Zheng He's ship. It was a large on with pointy ends and curved ends. When you look faraway it looks like a metal mop with pointy ends! Then Ms Anna made us take a group photo at the fence of the ship. We had to squish along the line, and in the camera you can't see some of the kids. Afterwards, we looked headed back to the bus, because everyone's water is gone (well, mostly only like three kids have water left), and we were extremely thirsty. I thought I would die of thirst! We passed the big statue of Zheng He. He was on a big rock stadium. Mostly kids climbed up to where Zheng He was standing, but I didn't want to squish up there. I have the ability to climb, but I just decided not to. Firstly, it can make Ms Anna hard to fit us all in. Second, people that can't climb up might feel ashamed of themselves. So I stayed at the bottom. I didn't care so much.
We tried to get water, and no one has a drop of water. The three people with water doesn't want to share it. So Ms Emma, Ms June and Ms Amanda decided to buy some water for each of us. We were really going to faint without enough water in our bodies. But we managed to wait until the bus pulled up in front of NIS and we filled our water bottles in the water fountains. Water at last! No water, no life!

Despite the hot weather, it was a fun and knowledgeable field trip!~

The Famous and Heroic Captain James Cook

Captain James Cook, born 7 November 1728, and died at 14 February 1779 was a British explorer, navigator and cartographer. Cook made detailed and accurate maps of the three voyages he made to the Pacific Ocean. He sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe.

First Voyage (1768 - 1771)
In 1768, Captain Cook began the first Pacific voyage from New Zealand, Tahiti, to the Arctic. The aim of the voyage was to observe the passage of Venus over the disc of the Sun from Tahiti and then to search for "Great Southern Continent" south of Tahiti. His ship, Endeavor, left Plymouth on 25 August 1768, called at madeira and Rio de Janeiro and, after rounding Cape Horn, reaching Tahiti on 10 April 1769. The transit of Venus was duly recorded on 3 June 1769 and Cook soon began the second part of the voyage.
He searched for, and prove,d that there was no continent to the south and west of Tahiti, discovered the east coast of New Zealand and charted its coasts. During his voyage Cook discovered and named Botany Bay. He boarded Endeavor. He reached batavia on 10 October 1770. A number died at Batavia and on the way back to the Cape. The expedition had been, however, a great success.

Second Voyage (1772 - 1775)
The second voyage began in 1772. Cook had been promoted to Commander and given two new ships, Resolution and Adventure to replace the dilapidated Endeavor. In January 1773, Cook became the first navigator to cross the Antarctic circle and soon proved that no continent existed in the Southern Ocean above polar latitudes. During this voyage, Cook landed at New Zealand, Tahiti, the Friendly Islands (Tonga), Easter Island, the Marquesas Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, the Isle of Pines and the South Sandwich Islands.

Third Voyage (1776 - 1779)
The object of the third voyage was to search for a 'North-East or North-West Passage. from the Pacific Ocean into the Atlantic Ocean'. From the start of the voyage there were problems. Cook's ships. Resolution and Discovery, had been badly refitted and defects occurred during the voyage. Cook's crew searched to the edge of the Arctic ice without finding a northern passage into the Atlantic, explored and charted the northern Pacific coasts and discovered the islands of the Sandwich Group in the North Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii.
Upon going ashore at Hawaii, Cook was baffled by the great ceremony which greeted his arrival. He did not realise that he was being accepted as a Polynesian god, whose return to the island bringing gifts was prophesied in Polynesian legends. Priests and chiefs called upon the islanders to make contributions, putting a heavy strain on their resources.

Death (1779)
By the time the two ships sailed again on 4 February 1779, their departure was hailed with relief. It was a tragic twist of fate that forced them to return two days later after Resolution had sprung her foremast. This time the natives were hostile. On 14 February 1779 a ship's boat was stolen by the islanders, forcing Cook ashore to bring a chief off the island as a hostage for its return. A large group of natives gathered with weapons to resist the arrest of their chief. Upon attack, Cook fired his musket but the shot bounced harmlessly off a warrior's armour. Cook was overwhelmed and stabbed to death.

The Spectacular Visit to the Nanjing Hongshan Zoo

On April 9th 2012, the Grade 4 team went to Nanjing Hongshan Zoo for introducing our fantastic new unit, 'How Exploration has Contributed to Change'. After queer and unexciting Mandarin class, we finally staggered to the Nanjing Hongshan Zoo. When we arrived, we were sorted into groups of six or seven (mixed 4B and 4A). My group members were: Sabrina, Jakob, Daniel, Sowoon and some others. We were in Ms Emma's group, and our main focus of where the animals were from were North America. Unfortunately, there wasn't many animals overseas from North America, mostly are from Africa.

We first went to see the disgusting and freaky reptiles, snakes, fish, crocodiles and giant lizards. They were peculiar but worth it to learn. None of those were from North America. Then when we came out of the reptile section, surprisingly, most of the kids in Mr Fielke's group, were munching on snacks. I thought that why are they eating their snacks when we only saw one of them? Ms Emma asked us if we were hungry, but we weren't (thank goodness), so we continued or main search on North American animals and other country animals too. We went to the monkeys next. The monkeys were very active, brown ones, black ones and yellowish-gold monkeys that left me the deepest memory. Those yellowish-gold monkeys were called 'Golden Monkeys'. They looked gorgeous. The black monkeys were playing tag and the most active ones. They were mostly jumping around and swinging. One time a brown monkey turned around his back because a butterfly flew past him. Most of us can understand why he turned his back around, but the local people especially the ones with kids were pointing at him to turn around and face them but I thought, monkeys have feelings too. They might just be animals, but it doesn't mean that they deserve to be pointed at (which was very rude), and being yelled at. Some of the babies even screamed that made my ears split just because the monkey turned around. That's absurd!

The next stop was the Australian animals, which was very useful for Mr Fielke's group because their main animal focus was on Australia. The first animal we saw from Australia was the kangaroos. The kangaroos were all lying down and looked poor and bored. I felt deeply sorry for them. As we walked, we saw a tall bird that somewhat looked like a ostrich, but not pinkish-red like ostriches. They were from Australia too, they were called an Emu. There were other Australian animals, but I personally think they are not as interesting as the other animals.

Afterwards we went to see the zebras. The zebras were pretty. I think that if someone sells the zebra's coats, it must be very expensive. There were only a few zebras, but our goal is to see the hippos. Very sadly, when we ran eagerly to the hippo habitat, the door was closed and we were not allowed to go in. We tried have a peek of the hippos by pressing our face on the filthy glass window. We didn't have a peek at all, so we started to go to another animal. But miraculously, the zookeeper came an opened the door (maybe by seeing how depressed we were), and let us in to have a view of the hippos. We were all overjoyed. All of us ran inside, pushing each other and not minding the harshness. It stinks terribly in there, and the two gigantic hippos with a baby hippo were lying to the cold concrete, with mud stained water pool in front of them. Everybody was so interested in the hippos and soon forgot about the unpleasant smell from the hippos (I don't think they ever bathed with clean water even though they swim in mud water everyday!)

Next we went to the Bengal Tigers. They were from Asia. There were white ones and yellow/orange ones. They seemed quite impatient and not pleased with their habitat, because it's just a boring green-wired cage with a shady place where they can lye in to avoid the loudness of the day and having a pleasant nap- that's better than anything. We planned to see the wolves, which are from North America next, but instead we went to the apes habitats.
As we walked to the apes habitats, we passed a habitat that looks much more fun and playful then the tiger's. It was the orangutans's play area. The truth is, the orangutan's actually have the best play and living area in all the animals that I've visited so far, but the orangutans doesn't use it much. Like the monkeys, they have a decent play area too but not as good as the orangutans, but they use it a lot. The orangutans play area is also very entertaining to people just like us. It has seesaws, slides, wood play things and all kinds of play equipments that we people really like.
We arrived at the ape's habitat shortly after the orangutan's habitat. The ape's habitat is also very fascinating but not as colorful as the orangutan's. The ape's have a bed hanged from the ceiling, and a few play equipments like the monkeys. The floor's made of concrete, but the zoo managers chose the best place for the orangutans- which the floor's fresh and trimmed grass. The apes were huge with brown long fur and big foot and hands.

That was a long time from arriving and the time we finished exploring the 'first session' of animals. No North American animals so far. When we came out of the apes habitat, there was a peaceful park with new grown dark and light pink cherry blossoms. That was the place for our morning break. To be honest, I was very hungry, in fact starving. I took out my snacks and munched on them like rats eating cheese. I ate and chatted about fifteen minutes with Joy and Chaewon.
After that, we went to look at the giraffes, which are from Africa. The giraffes were very tall and handsome, with a super long neck and a highly raised small head. I walked with Joy, since that most of the Koreans and Sabrina was walking ahead of us, and said, "Joy, I have such a heavy and tiring bag. How heavy's yours?" Kindly, Joy volunteered to help me carry the bag which I really appreciated. Joy's own bag was much heavier than mines, which I barely can lift with my two arms. She said she has her own stuff in there too. After the giraffe visit, Mr Fielke's group and Ms Emma's group separated and went in search for more animals which were very boring and not interesting to hear about.

After forty-five minutes, which we spent like twenty five minutes on walking, was lunchtime. I had packed a sandwich and a mango for lunch. I met with the four or five other groups and had lunch altogether. I sat with my friends, Lena, Minji, Chaewon, Gloria, Seoin, Mariette, Meghna and Sabrina which I haven't seen for the past four hours (well, except Chaewon).
We ate our lunches and went to the pond to admire the fishes. We talked about our new exploration and looked at fishes. Thirty minutes passed.

After lunch, we first went to look at wolves, which took us twenty minutes to walk uphill and downhill to look at it, but we found out that they're from NORTH AMERICA!!! So we immediately wrote down wolves. Then at the black leopards, which Sabrina (or someone else) said they were panthers. The normal-patterned yellow leopards were pacing around in circles in the small cage and so did the black leopards. I felt sorry for them like the kangaroos. They really should deserve a better place to live. Next and lastly was the moon bears, which we had to walk to an fixing amusement park. The moon bears were cute but also poor. The zookeepers take their liver out of them everyday to make medicine for people. The moon bears were also from NORTH AMERICA. Ms Emma said the deers were also from North America, but they're moved away.

This amazing visit to the zoo gave me an introduction to our new unit, and gave me a clear understanding about exploration. I hope we can learn new things by visiting places and I look forwards for the next field trip!

Police Officers Around The World

Wall-crawling Female Cop in Iran:
There's female police officers in Iran! They wear beautiful black and dark blue pantos (long robes) uniforms and a chador (an covering veil). They are allowed to climb walls, fire AK's, set bombs, and take down perps. They train shooting guns, climbing and making bombs. A girl in red or wearing short mantos (overalls) with long hair tumbling out will be taken by the police officers.

Camel-riding Egypt Police Officers:
Police officers in Egypt ride on camels, they are not allowed to wear masks. The police academy offers a two-year program which includes: security administration, criminal investigation, military drills, civil defense, fire fighting, forensic medicine, communication, cryptology, first aid, sociology, anatomy, and foreign languages (English, French etc), political orientation, public relations, and military subjects (such as infantry and cavalry training), marksmanship, leadership and field excursion. Graduates receive a bachelor of police studies degree and are commissioned first lieutenants. Uniforms are similar to army uniforms, khaki drill cotton . Black wool jacket, also wear blue or black beret.

Lamborghini-riding Italy Police Officers:
Being a police officer in Italy is a lucky job. It's the job that mans dream of. Whenever an accident or criminals are been found, they will drive on the handsome and cool dark sapphire blue Lamborghini Gallardo. Could you even believe that (no!)?????????????????????

Wind-Fast Japan Police Officers:
Whenever an accident or something urgent that police officers needs to be involved, as far as I know, the Japanese police officers are the fastest in the wide world to get to the emergency. No matter how far they live, they can arrive in four minutes and twenty seconds. That means they work for their country and we all look up to them. Japanese Police Officers wear white gloves while they are on duty. Some also wear white pistol belts, lanyards, helmets, boot laces or leggings.

Magic Excitement

What excites me most is the thirty minutes that I have before bedtime. It's a reward for me, actually. After I got on my bed, I would put my laptop on my lap and type all kinds of stories. I feel like I'm in a different world, every detail seemed to be part of my story, and as I write on and on, the excitement grows and grows. My fingers and hand never stopped to take a rest- at least I didn't want to. I didn't want to stop all of this. It seemed like I'm in fantasy world, and my mind was filled with words, and as my fingers were typing faster and faster, words started popping out, I didn't know whatever is going on in my life. It becomes funner and funner, crazier and crazier, with words filling the blank page. Everything suddenly in my life became real. I could hear the singing and wonderful voices from creatures, animals and people. My mind never seemed to stop thinking. Words were popping out in my head, my fingers were flying across the screen, my eyes were bulging out and I thought that maybe I could type on and on until midnight, I never felt tired or exhausted, every part of my body were out of control. I simply can't stop myself. When ideas were running out, I grabbed one of my favorite or inspiring fiction books and started flipping and searching through pages. Whenever a good idea appeared, I immediately typed it on my laptop. Books were the most inspiring and interesting things to find, and research. In less than thirty minutes, a seven page full story came out. I was so inspired by the interesting facts in the books and I thought to myself, 'if the authors can write such inspiring and beautiful books, I wonder if I can too.' I started stealing facts and information out of different books and adding them to my stories. WIth those information, I can create more and more fun facts and other stories with the information I gathered. From one little inspiration, I can turn it into a imagination.

What can I do...

Welcome to my Extraordinary, Jaw-Dropping Art Book!!!

Here you'll find a variety of art projects that I can do- and if I can do it, you can do it easily!

Your ultimate step-by-step guide to creating amazing art.

Here what you need for every single piece of art project:
Pencils- you'll need normal pencils (HB), 2B, 4B and 8B for color shading.
Eraser- you can make highlights in your drawings by revealing the paper underneath
Charcoal and chalk- for large areas of color and adding texture
Oil or chalk pastels- they give a delicate, blurry effect when you smudge them.
Paints and inks- watercolors are soft and watery.
Stationaries- scissors, sharpeners and glue (not recommending water glue).

1# Drawing, Sketching, and Cartooning- Top techniques for drawing people, paces, and pets!

How to draw cities:

City streets are full of exciting shapes. Follow the steps below to make your own city scene!

1) Lightly sketch the outline of different buildings across the bottom of the paper.

2) Draw taller buildings behind. Use a ruler to keep your lines straight.

3) Sketch in building details, such as doors and windows. Make details smaller in the background, so some buildings look farther away.

4) Go over the outlines of your buildings in wax crayons or pastels. Use a different color for each building.

5) Color the rest of your picture using strong bright colors. Paint a colorful and imaginary sky behind your city, or cut out a row of buildings and glue it to a sheet of colored paper.

Then ta-da! Your very first drawing is completed! Congratulations!

2# Painting and Printing- create amazing art from blowing and with a toothbrush!

Splitter Splatter!:

Make a lively painting by spattering paint onto paper with a brush or toothbrush. (You will need: An old toothbrush)

1) Draw fish and starfish a sheet of paper. Turn the paper over and place it face down on some newspaper

2) Dip a toothbrush in yellow paint, then drag your finger over the bristles to spatter the paint on the paper. Try flicking the yellow and orange paint with ordinary brushes, too.

3) Now flick blue and green paint onto a second sheet of paper. Use different shades of blue and green to make a speckled sea background

4) When the paint is dry, turn the paper over and cut out the fish and starfish with safety scissors. Arrange them on your sea background and glue them down.

Then your second art project is done! Well done!

Straw Paints:

Blowing paints through a straw makes the paint wander in wiggly lines and creates wonderful and unusual shapes. (You will need: A plastic drinking straw)

1) Add water to some poster or acrylic paint to make the paint runny

2) Drop a large blob of paint onto your paper with a brush

3) Gently blow the paint through the straw. THe paint will spread across the paper in wiggly lines

4) Add different color one by one

5) Add details with a crayon or brush to complete the painting.

3# World Art- Create spectacular art from felt and foam!

African Cloth Picture:

In Benin, Africa, people tell stories in brightly colored cloth pictures. You can make your own picture using felt. (You will need: Felt. Black, red, yellow and orange).

1) Draw an animal with felt-tip pen on the back of a piece of felt. Ask an adult to help you cut it out with scissors.

2) Ask an adult to help you cut out a piece of black felt for your background. Make it at least 5 cm bigger than your felt shape.

3) Cut out four strips of colored felt, 3 cm wide to make a frame. Overlap the strips at each corner and glue them in place.

4) Glue your animal picture in the middle of the black background.

Terrific!

Arabian Mosaic:

In Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia, colored tiles are arranged in geometric shapes to make beautiful mosaic patterns. (You will need: Craft foam, cut into small squares and white cardboard).

1) Ask an adult to help you cut foam squares into triangles, then cut some of the triangles into smaller triangles

2) Glue a square into the middle of a piece of white cardboard. Glue four small triangles around it

3) Add four large triangle shapes...

4) ...Then add eight small triangle shapes

5) Finish with eight large triangles to form a square.

Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!

4# Collage & Sculptures- Create exciting and many pictures and sculptures with a huge difference!

Magazine Collage:

Make a collage from scraps cut or torn from magazines/ Choose a theme you find interesting- this one is about food. Get inspired by other things too! (You will need: Plenty of old magazines and cardboard).

1) Fine pictures in magazines about your theme. Using safety scissors, cut out as many pictures as you can.

2) Arrange pictures on your mount board until you like the way they look.

3) Glue the pictures onto the mount board.

A simple but delicious and appetizing poster!

Thumb Pot:

This project shows how to make a simple clay pot and decorate it with lively colors and patterns. (You will need: Air-dying clay and modeling tools).

1) Roll the clay into a ball between the palms of your hands. It should be about half the side of a tennis ball.

2) Holding the ball in one hand, push the thumb of your other hand into the middle of the clay.

3) Open out the middle of the pot by gently pinching the sides between your thumb and fingers. Keep turning the pot as you pinch, to keep the sides the same thickness.

4) When you like the pot's shape, flatten the bottom by tapping it gently on a flat surface. Pet it dry out a little, then decorate it using modeling tools, or by adding pieces of clay.

5) When the clay is completely hard, paint your pot with poster paint and let it dry. Finish it off with a coat of craft glue mixed with a little water.

Then your very last and beautiful piece of art work has finished! Show all your art works to your relatives, parents and friends. Prove to them all that you're talented and a true ARTIST!!!

Gravity

G ravity is a force that an object has on another object.

R iding a bike uphill is hard because the gravity of the earth drags you the opposite way.

A stronauts in the spaceship has to catch the water-bubbles because of zero gravity.

V enus's gravity is very similar to the Earth.

I saac Newton discovered gravity by an apple falling on his head.

T ides in the ocean are dependent upon gravitational interaction between the earth and the moon.

Y ou will bump on the moon because there's less gravity.

WE CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT GRAVITY!!!

The Fearless, Daring Firefighters

Before I watched the documentary movie '9/11', my image about firefighters are only people who throws pails of water to put out the fire. During the accident in September 11th, the firefighters ran into the tower and rescued the people instead of saving themselves. Firefighters are really brave and noble. In the fierce, flaming fire, they have to force their way through and stop the fire from burning. They are the only people in the whole world that doesn't escape. Look at us. When a fire burns we all run away cowardly. The firefighters could be killed of the hotness. But they still fought and some firefighters do die.
I think a firefighter should be a person like this:
They need to have a personality that can control themselves from panicking.
They need to be a perfect risk-taker.
They need to be a person that cares about every single person in this world.
I really appreciate and adore how the firefighters bare the hotness and have the braveness to force himself.
They also worry about themselves, their family, their close friends and all the people that are important to them.
And all of us are important to them. It's there job to rescue us.

The Tools and Clothing that Firefighters wear and bring:

Firefighters wears a special fabric named Nomex. The special fabric is fire retardant, so if the fabric touches fire it won’t catch on fire. It’s a big lifesaver for them because if they wore normal clothing, there’s a good chance tat all the sparks flying around would light it on fire. In order to work on fire, they also have to carry a folded-up fire shelter. A fire shelter looks like a one-person tent made of aluminum and fiberglass.

They have to wear a hard hat, because there are snags, such as dead trees or falling branches, that can hit them. There are actually numerous things that can fall. They also have an IA (Initial Attack) pack, which is basically a backpack that carries quite a bit of water. They also carry other things in the pack, usually one change of clothes and some fusees, which are ignition devices kind of like very hot flares. One of the ways firefighters try to save themselves from entrapment is to use a fusee to light another fire to burn all the fuel in an area. A firefighter can get into the black area that has already been burned, which is what we call a safety zone.

The different equipments in the IA pack:
Quick-deploy fire shelter
A variety of hand tools
Reference books for dealing with every kind of fire
Velcro (for repairing clothing and packs)
Extra socks and bandannas
Extra Nomex pants
Extra shoelaces
Lip balm
Earplugs
Goggles
Fusees
Matches
Electrical Tape

White Spring Festival

Our family went to Hokkaido, a city in Japan. It was freezing there! Fourty five degrees below zero, can you imagine how cold is that? The endless snow was one meter high! It was so cold that I was stuffed like a snowball when I finished putting on so many clothes! Even though I wore so many clothes and barely could see my face, I was still chilled to the bone.

It was icy cold, but we still had lots of fun. On the third day in Hokkaido, we went skiing. That day was beautiful. When we opened our hotel curtain, the view was like manmade! It looked like a television set! The high mountains, with white, spotless, milky, natural snow lay everywhere. It was like a piece of white bedding or blanket over the mountains. The sky was cyan blue, every building held colossal, extraodinary icicle. The sharp icicle could at least cut your finger!
In the bitter cold wind and weather, we climbed right up the snowhill and I gasped in amazement. What a breathtaking view! It was too good to be true! It was gorgeous! I didn't dare to ruin one bit of it. I felt blameworthy when I stepped on the soft snow. It really was too good to be true.

I learned briskly and as soon as I got the sensation, I started racing down the mountains in a fast pace.
In the afternoon, we made snowmans, had a snowball fight, and licked on icicles, and went sledding.
I felt I was in a winter-snow world or something. What could a person wish more than this? Sledding, skiing, licking on icicles, snowball fight, snowmans. A minute ago I was shouting and laughing and running. A minute after I was still laughing and shouting and running. Am I in a dream or something?
I don't think so.

My Sickest Week

My sickest day in my life is when I got pneumonia. I had lung inflammation caused by bacterial and viral infection. I got pneumonia when I was about three or four years old. I didn't cough or sneeze, but only felt very, very stressed out.
When I went to the children's hospital, the doctor said I need to have IV (intravenous) for three days. Intravenous (IV for short), is a kind of treatment of intravenous drip in the hospital. A bag of liquid that cures your sickness will be hanging on a hanger, then in a pipe, the liquid would slowly drip into your hand, then through your veins into your body. The nurse sticks the needle into your vein, and you just sit there until the entire bag of liquid is gone.

After three days of painful IV, I was really excited because I get to go back home! But unfortunately, the doctor did an x-ray, checked my blood, and he said that I needed another few days of IV treatment. I was crestfallen. Another few days of this painful, aching, throbbing, unpleasant treatment? Not me! But after all the reasons and ignorant explanation, I had to take another few days of the distressing, miserable IV. The IV took me two hours a day, so I had a week absent from school. I went every morning from Wednesday to Saturday, going to the noisy, ear-splitting children's hospital.

After a week of depressed, wounding treatment, I went back to school at Monday. I was very delighted to be at school- at least away from infirmity.

My Independence Day

This winter holiday my family and I went to Hong Kong. Now this day that I'm going to write about is one of my favorite days among the trip. Just wait and see!

One afternoon, on the 23rd of December, the whole day our family stayed home. We had nothing to do. Anthony stared at me, I stared at him. My dad was reading the newspaper from last night, and my mom was reading a fashion magazine.
Time went so slow. One hour seemed like five hours. So when half of the day passed, it felt like a day! And when our clock struck two o'clock in the afternoon, Anthony threw his arms up and declared: "I need some fresh air! I want to go outside! A whole day stuck in this stupid house is killing me!" "Then what do you want to do?" My mom asked, putting the magazine on her lap and looked at her son suspiciously. "I want to go out with Daddy to the nearby street to look at the race cars." Anthony said. My mom bit her lip and hesitated. My dad was still reading his newspaper, pretending that he didn't care whatever Anthony insisted to go.
"Fine. Angela, do you want to go with Daddy and Anthony to take a look at the cars?" My mom asked me. I shook my head.
"What do you want to do at the car shop? You can only do eye shopping, Anthony! They won't allow you inside unless you pay for the car." I picked. "I just want to go! I don't care if it's eye shopping or what, I just want to get out of this house!" Anthony fumed.
I sighed and said, "Okay, you can go. Mom, I'm not going. I wanna stay home. I prefer staying anyway. This place is more safe and sound, plus I can do whatever I want." I said. My mom frowned. "Are you sure, Angela? Don't you want to go?" She asked. I shook my head. "All right. You can stay home if you want to. I'm going to go shopping. So you're going to be home with the nanny, okay?" I nodded. Then they prepared to go outside. I was so so so happy! I got free time alone without anyone bossing me around! Ha! This is going to be fun! My nanny is cooking dinner, so I can do whatever naughty things I can think of, just make sure not making the nanny mad.

After a few minutes they left, I cheered and went into my room. I have a window that was attached to a little mattress and a few orange pillows, so I lay down on that mattress and admired the view outside. It was a sunny and beautiful day outside. But then I thought I have about two and a half hours free, so lying on a mattress admiring the view is a bit of a waste of time, so I decided to do something fun, something I have not done before. So I got up and went into the bathroom, made wet tissues and made a target on a piece of paper, stuck it on the mirror and threw wet tissues on it. I got thirty tissues and had about sixteen to twenty hits on the target. But that was a waste of tissues, so I went into my mom and dad's room, climbed onto their big bed and jumped on it. It was like a trampoline! Then bounced, made cartwheels and tried to do something on the bed. By the time the bed sheets were ruffled, the duvet had fallen off onto the floor, and my head was dizzy, I stopped and lay on it. After a few minutes, I got up and made the bed nicely. It looked like nobody had ruined it. Then I went into the kitchen, got me a bag of chips, and lay on the sofa (without me realizing it was a waste of time) for about an hour or so. Then slowly fell asleep until the dumb noisy door bell woke me up. Urgh!

My Brother Is A Bother

My brother is a bother,
he climbs up the cabinets,
throws napkins in my cup,
Sticks gum on the ceiling,
Oh, what a bother he is!
He plays with his food,
and he breaks his toys.....
How dreadful to have a brother like this!

Oh no.....I see him coming out of his room.
I try to hide, I try to be sick, I tried to calm down,
I took a aspirin at last. I hoped the aspirin would work.
Here he comes.
Jumping around the house like a flying monkey.
Great. Absolutely wonderful.
My aspirin was stuck in my throat! How sore!
At last I found a way to survive:
I lay on the carpet, pretending to be a dead person.

Tips:
It's really hard to survive from a brother like I have.
He probably one day would make you die.
Hard, complicated ways of solving a brother may not be the best ways,
but the easiest ways may really be working.
Just imagine him as a bear...that's what I thought at the minute.
When a bear comes, you pretend to die, that's the best way because bears don't eat dead people.
Sometimes how I solve my brother could be really absurd to you, but it really does works.

Grade 4 Fundraiser

Group introduction:
On November the 23rd, Grade 4 had their fundraiser for the Henan orphans.
These are the people who formed our group:
Jakob, Kezia, So woon, Siha and me. We were a successful and enthusiastic group.
One of the steps which organized our group are taking different roles:
Leader (me)
Secretary (So woon)
Advertising Executive (Kezia)
Treasurer (Jakob)
Helper (Siha)
We just created a job for Siha, because there's no job left for him.
Our product was cotton candy.

Targets:
- All the advertising posters would be bold, attractive and eye-catching
- Our profit would be high enough for the Henan orphanage
- Sell as much cotton candy (candy floss) as we can.

Fundraising:
Step 1: We set up our posters and stuff on pin-boards or tables.
Step 2: We set our cotton candy machine on a table next to a plug.
Step 3: Try making.
Step 4: Add enough sugar for the cotton candy.
Step 5: Wait for the people to come.
Step 6: Make cotton candy for the people for period 2~3.
Step 7: Take off all the things and go back to classroom.

Conclusion:
I was actually very happy with our final profit. We got 725RMB! Our posters were beautifully completed and informational. I was really happy inside when I saw all the people lining up behind us. As the tally chart grow and grow, my heart lighten and lighten.
As a leader, I would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to my group members, and I believe they are also proud of our result.

Show Your Smile :)

I, had many funny and painful experiences with the dentist.
Now I will tell one of my funny experience:

That day, I went to the dentist with my mum and Anthony. Anthony went to clean his teeth, and I went to have a check-up.
But after a few minutes, a heard a loud, painful, battle scream. It sounded like Anthony's cry. I didn't have time to check on him, so I continued showing my smile so the dentist could check my teeth.

When we finished, I saw Anthony in the waiting room. Anthony looked really funny. And I found out that he bit the nurse's finger! So the scream wasn't completely from him, there was a half from the nurse!
When I saw the nurse's gloves, it was patterned with a lovely teeth mark on it.

I think we should care our teeth properly. And always remember that even though your teeth may not be so neat and nice, but give it a try to show your smile. That way, your teeth may not be beautiful, but your shine and brightness hid your nervousness and gives the people a wonderful memory about your confidence.
